SEO for a Game Site

Here's what I learned about SEO while building a game site. It might not be perfect, just notes for myself.
There were already plenty of game sites when I started, so I wasn't trying to reinvent anything. Mostly I just figured out what keywords to use for the homepage and individual pages, then planned out what content each page should have.
Homepage
People should be able to start playing the moment they land on the page. I've seen sites that fill their homepage with a wall of game options. That works fine for established platforms like CrazyGames or Poki—they have brand recognition and aren't pushing one specific game. But when you're building a site around traffic for a particular game and plan to expand later, the homepage needs to feature that game front and center, ready to play. It keeps people around.
Still need links to other games, though. One game per page means you need more content to keep users engaged. Make those links visible—throw in categories and tags so people can actually find what they're looking for.
Game Pages
My approach: homepage is basically the main game's content. Other pages use the same template with different content swapped in.
Content
You need server-side rendering. Crawlers grab the HTML; they don't bother with whatever JavaScript renders after the fact.
Structure matters. H1, H2, H3 need to follow proper hierarchy. Get it wrong and search engines won't know what your page is actually about.
Categories and Tags
This one bit me. I noticed Google wasn't indexing my category and tag pages. Took a closer look—yeah, that's on me. Those pages were just titles and a grid of game links. Fixed it by adding short descriptions and longer markdown writeups to each one.
